CATEY SHAW

Sounds like: MAUSI, Jessie J, Katy Perry
Catey Shaw brings her hipster attitude mixed with an up tempo beat to make people feel proud to be from Brooklyn. Catey’s Brooklyn EP dropped just ten days ago and I am addicted to it. With 7 songs, it borderlines becoming a full studio album, but I…

WILDLIFE

Sounds like: X Ambassadors, Jimmy Eat World, Hollerado

With bands like Wild Child and Wild Cub appearing on my blog, you know I couldn’t skip out on Wildlife. Originating from my hometown, Toronto, this band has been around for nearly a decade. If you’re craving a band that can make you groove, these fellas are for you. They gain influence from greats like The Clash, Bruce Springsteen, and David Bowie. They’ve released two full length albums, Strike Hard, Young Diamond and more recently, …On the Heart (released March 5th). The new album has an upbeat rock vibe to it with an indie background. The title of the album has to do with the fact that it (the album) has a lot of meaning to them (Wildlife) and that it does to me as well.  I want to sing along with Dangerous Times at the top of my lungs (with an air guitar)!  Two hearts has me breathless. Too many good songs on this album to mention in one post. Check them out!

BASIA BULAT

Sounds like: The Head and the Heart, Agnes Obel, Ron Pope

Right out of Etobicoke (suburb of Toronto), Basia Bulat has worked to get to where she is now, though I feel she needs to get much more attention. I remember being awe-struck seeing her interviewed in a cineplex premovie show. The fact that an artist I discovered through the indie waves is getting national attention is shocking. She’s released 3 full length albums with her trusty autoharp (I have a copy of them all!). Her latest album, Tall Tall Shadow is oddly chilling, but hits you right where it hurts, the heart. I’ll put a link to the title track, but all of the tunes off the album are perfect reflecting/jamming on the subway music. Never Let Me Go grasps me and holds tightly around my neck. Keep it up Basia! I’m looking forward to seeing you perform live.

KODALINE

Sounds like: Tom Odell, Gabrielle Aplin, Ed Sheeran

So last night I got to see Kodaline at their first show of their new concert tour! There was such a big demand to see this band, the venue had to change and it sold out. The entire audience was singing along to all their songs. Simply put, it was magical. I’m a bit disappointed that they never played my favourite song, Talk, but I guess it’s not much of a concert song anyway. A band called LP opened up for them and they were pretty uplifting. But back to Kodaline. Their newest album, In a Perfect World is a perfect mix of vocals and steady beats and every song sounds different. Love Like This will get you on your feet, Lose You Mind will take you somewhere else, sounding a bit like Led Zeppelin, High Hopes will keep you dreaming, and All I Want will leave you craving more. This is definitely a band worth checking out!

JULY TALK

Sounds like: Hollerado, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Mother Mother

July Talk released their self titled album this past October. They’re a Toronto band that I was fortunate enough to see at my university. Peter Dreimanis’ rough vocals compliment Leah Fay’s high smooth ones. It’s a sound like no other and they really know how to own the stage, livening the audience that wasn’t familiar with their music. Although this band is still in its developing stages, their music is much appreciated from people all over the world and every song from their album is a catch. Indie Rock at its finest.

HIGHS

Sounds like: The Paper Kites, WALLA, Haerts

Toronto hasn’t been big in the indie scene, but HIGHS would definitely be a step in the right direction! They released their self titled EP in summer of last year, which conveniently has an upbeat single called Summer Dress. Since the release of their album, they’ve been on the road of  promotion to get heard. This band is full of energy and their music is genuinely fun influenced from their time spent in Tanzania. The EP is not just good music; the songs each have their own meaning and listening to the lyrics can create many, many feels!
